The methodology for determining the Best Hospitals is based on surveys of tens of thousands of women, recommendation ratings based on patient feedback, the most recent publicly available information from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and research conducted in partnership with the Wharton School of Business. This research examines factors that influence the consumer experience for women compared to men.

Six months ago, MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center opened its Women's Health Pavilion, which is designed specially around the unique needs of women's healthcare. Additionally, The Women's Hospital recently renovated their Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) suites to become a more holistic and spa-like environment with lavender-scented towels celebratory brunches for new mothers and some rooms are equipped with birthing tubs.
